Principal photography begins April 13th in Cape Town on the feature film adaptation of “Hollywood in my Huis”, based on the acclaimed 2005 short film by writer/director Corne van Rooyen.
Made as part of his AFDA degree, the 25 minute ‘quirky gem’ won 7 prizes including Best 4th year production, best director, screenplay, producer, editing, sound and cinematography.
This endearing comedic fairy tale went on to play at numerous film festivals and scooped awards at the “Right Eye” and “In die Bos” festivals .
The spirited, refreshing coming-of-age romantic comedy revolves around a teenage girl, Jana, a wallflower who lives in an impoverished neighbourhood with her dysfunctional parents. After seeing Charlize Theron win the Oscar she decides there and then to change her destiny. Jana navigates the minefield that is family, friendship, peer pressure and a vivid teenage imagination to secure her own Hollywood red carpet moment at the upcoming Matric Farewell dance.
Van Rooyen who has 8 years of film and television experience wrote the screenplay together with his wife Rene, Writer and Director of the award-winning short film “Nantes”. For his feature debut they are collaborating with major industry players and accomplished local screen stars.
Dylan (“Skoonheid”, “The Beautiful Game”) Voogt and Saskia (“Mune: Love between Worlds”, Mandela Rhodes Scholar) Schiel of Stage 5 Films are producing together with the van Rooyen’s Red Letter Day Pictures. Jan du Plessis of KykNet is executive producer alongside accomplished Producer Vlokkie Gordon with her new company Advantage Entertainment she is focusing on developing new talent and stories for the local market and sees “Hollywood in My Huis” as the perfect vehicle for building a vibrant local cinema.
Two new talents will make their screen debuts in Hollywood in my Huis, with Christa Visser as Jana joined by Edwin van Der Walt as Frikkie, the boy next door. They are joined by accomplished actors who have become local stars, Louw (Semi-Soet, Die Laaste Tango) Venter and Nicola (Faan se Trein) Hanekom together with Leandie (Klein Karoo) Du Randt and Vilje (Binneland, Swartwater) Maritz with radio and TV personality Elana Afrika making up the appealing cast.
Van Rooyen will also be teaming up with an accomplished creative team including; SAFTA Award-winning cinematographer Zenn van Zyl, Michelle Randall, Production Designer with fashion designer Julita de Wet doing wardrobe alongside SAFTA nominated Hair and Make-Up artist Julene Paton. Ben (“Skoonheid” “Die Wonderwerker”) Ludick will be composing the soundtrack whilst Roshni Haraldsen, most recently the post-production supervisor for End Post will be editing the film.
