Catherine Muller is a graduate with commendation of Bristol University’s M.A. programme in Film and Television. From 1999 to 2002 Catherine was series director on the youth current affairs show Get Real awarded the NHK Japan Prize for courage in depicting youth in difficult circumstances.
In 2001 Catherine directed and shot Very Fast Guys, a one-hour documentary that chronicled the lives of four gangsters in Sebokeng over the course of a year. Catherine was producer for Sesame Workshop New York producing 92 live action films and directing 13 first-of-a-kind films for children about HIV.
In 2004 and 2005, Catherine worked on the Constitution Hill project documenting the stories of the political ex-prisoners who were held there, among them Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Fatima Meer et al. Catherine also directed a commercial for UNICEF starring actor Laurence Fishburn (aka ‘Morpheus’ of The Matrix) as well as 2 commercials for the HIV/AIDS NGO Love Life. Her documentary, Four Rent Boys was screened at the Ten Years of Freedom Festival New York and her drama Sweet Mercy was screened at the Hamburg International Short Film Festival.
In 2006-2008 Catherine produced Total Soccer, a series of 20 documentaries for Little Bird UK (now part of West Park Pictures: www.westparkpictures.com) As part of Total Soccer she directed, researched and edited two one-hour episodes ‘Pitch Revolution Part 1 and 2’, that presented original, previously undocumented material detailing the links between local football clubs and the anti-apartheid struggle of the 60s and 70s. Currently, Catherine continues to write drama scripts for Zone 14, a weekly series broadcast on SABC1 with an audience of some 6 million viewers. In 2007 Catherine directed 10 episodes for Zone 14.
This year, Catherine directed, shot and edited a 22-minute programme for Shuga, a new series on MTV Networks Europe and shot, directed and edited an 18-minute corporate video for Transnet. In October 2009 she conceptualised a 6x48-minute series titled Soccer Safari that received a very positive response from Sky Sports who were keen to commission but then unable to due to lack of funds. The project is currently in consideration with the satellite channel More4 of Channel4.
Catherine Muller is a member of the Documentary Filmmakers' Association (DFA) and the European Documentary Network (EDN). She is also registered as a content supplier with Al Jazeera Networks.
