The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture alongside the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Durban Film Office (DFO), Wesgro, and the South African Embassy in Berlin will represent South Africa at the Berlinale Film Festival.
The importance of the South African presence at Berlinale is to open up markets for SA content, to secure partnerships for co-production, position SA Filmmakers in global platforms aimed at professional and business skills development, and to position the South African film industry as a filmmaking destination and a production partner.
In 2004 the NFVF signed a coproduction treaty with Germany to benefit the South African film industry with the aim that each of the official co-producers would bring access to their domestic market and funds.
The Berlinale film festival offers fertile ground for international co-productions and can be used as a great platform for the NFVF and South African delegation to ignite the South African and global stories we have to tell.
High Fantasy, a film about a group of young friends on a camping trip, deep in the South African countryside who wake up to discover they have all swapped bodies, will also be screening at the festival on the following days:

The South African delegation at the Berlinale co-production market will also get the opportunity to participate in the South African networking session, as well as the coproduction workshop for producers looking to coproduce with South African filmmakers. The networking event and workshop will take place on the 18th of February 2018, 14h00 at the South African Embassy in Berlin, and looks towards solidifying the relationship between the two countries’ producers attending the festival and educating them on how to approach coproduction’s with South Africa.
