The workshop is aimed at young, up-and-coming writers/filmmakers with the intent to raise the stakes and teach our homegrown talent the skills required to create wonderful stories based on the Nigerian perspective and written to international standards. It is also ideal for people with experience looking for guidance on where to go next.
HomeVida and the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) are proud to present a ONE WEEK Screenwriting and Directing workshop for Short filmmakers. The purpose of this intensive Scriptwriting and Directing workshop is to use the SHORT FILM medium to focus on stories that promote values, integrity, and anti-corruption in Nigerian society.
The one-week workshop will be run by Australian Filmmaker Jolyon Hoff and screenwriter Emil B. Garuba and will involve intensive practical sessions where each writer will work individually and in small groups to create storylines, structure and character development. Participants’ work will be critiqued, deconstructed and broken down so that they can thoroughly understand by practical example, the mechanics of writing for the screen and what makes a short script successful or a flop.
The training is divided in two phases:
• Scripting the Short Film: Short Script Basics
• Directing the Short Film: Learn How to Use the 5D to Make a Short Film
• The workshop is a unique opportunity to train young Nigerian writers in screenwriting for short films, a skill which is integral to developing as feature filmmakers.
• Participants will also walk away with important tips about preparing oneself for the screenwriting/filmmaking profession and a comprehensive understanding of filmmaking concepts.
• At the end of the workshop, participants will be sent an electronic resource pack for further analysis (including FREE copies of Final Draft screenwriting software valued @ $250. Final draft is the number one-selling scriptwriting software in the world). Participants will also be expected to complete the screenplay for a short film.
