Gambia's Sankanu Makes Hollywood Debut

Gambia`s Prince Bubacarr Aminata Sankanu, is set to make his first appearance in a Hollywood movie. Sankanu has been approved to play a medical doctor in hospital scenes of a new feature of respected U.S. American film director Jim Jarmush. The film is to be shot in Germany, where the Gambian film maker is based.

Expressing his delight, Prince Sankanu says: “Amazing! Just stepping out of the South African movie set, I received a telephone call from a fellow young filmmaker that I am recommended for performance in a world class US-German co-production. I was then requested, through the official German agent, to send my picture and experience report to the director in Hollywood. The rest is fait accompli. Some people either break their bones or sell their grandmothers to go to Hollywood. I am humbled that Hollywood somehow came to me.’’Sankanu_Hollywood

Below is a full statement from the Gambian filmmaker.

I thank the African Ancestors for emboldening me with the capacity to keep making our mother Gambia proud, my way, one remarkable self-made achievement after the other. It is fair to give the devil its dues and I am very grateful to our ex-Gambian Parliamentary Speaker Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay (FJC).

Her prayers answered so soon and unexpected. She is the first living person to pray that I will cross over to Hollywood sooner or later in my film career. Within months of her prayers, I find myself gaining the coveted first hand Hollywood experience and reference in a serious world standard project that will surely open more doors for me in progression.

This shows how clean and genuine FJC's heart was while praying for my steady success across borders. Thank you God for answering her prayers with the high speed of Alburaq!

I am equally grateful to director Jim Jarmush for valuing my talent and giving me the highly competitive chance to add a priceless Hollywood credence to my international profile through his film project without me first hustling all the way to California, USA.’’

The new film is a vampire love story featuring Oscar laureate Tilda Swinton and John Hurt.

Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska will also play in the movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Jarmusch is producing Only Lovers Left Alive together with Cologne-based Pandora films.

The feature has picked up $1.45 million (€1 million) in production financing from state film subsidy body Filmstifftung NRW and will shoot in the NRW region of western Germany..’’
