Film to raise awareness of Zim abuses

The award-winning film telling the story of Zimbabwean farmer Ben Freeth and his father-in-law Mike Campbell is to be shown at venues in South Africa and the USA during the coming weeks.

“Mugabe and the White African” will be shown to raise the profile of human rights abuses in Zimbabwe ahead of imminent visits to both countries by President Robert Mugabe.

"You are probably aware that 'Mugabe' is coming to SA and the US in the next couple of weeks. It is a crucial time. If we get good audience numbers at all the screenings we could impact very seriously on his credibility and the land seizure programme,” said Andy Thompson, the man whose idea it was and who made the film

In the face of apathy towards the film from the commercial film industry, the promoters have offered to show the film at select venues in New York City, Los Angeles, Cape Town and Durban for a week in order to gauge public response. If it is found to be favourable, the film will then go onto the commercial circuit.

This was done in the UK and the film was a runaway success. It ran for a record 10 weeks in Leicester Square.
