Riaad Moosa takes Material to London

SA comedian Riaad Moosa says he is excited to premiere his debut film role in the comedy-drama Material at the 56th BFI London Film Festival next month.

This year's festival will run from 10-21 October as a 12-day celebration of international cinema.

Before heading to London, the producers will also take Material to be shown at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea, which will run from 4-13 October.

The movie, which was released in South Africa earlier this year, marks Riaad's big screen debut and is partially based on his own life story as he plays a young Muslim man, Cassim, with dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian, but meets resistance from his traditional family.

The movie, directed by Craig Freimond, will also offer South Africans living in the UK an opportunity to watch the movie.

"I'm very interested in finding out how much of the nuances international audiences will follow," Riaad told Channel24.

"Not necessarily the SA nuances, but also Muslim and Indian cultural nuances. In South Africa, the non-Muslim and non-Indian audiences have been able to get everything. Hopefully the rest of the world will follow!"

Material also stars Vincent Ebrahim as Cassim's strict father, as well as Joey Rasdien, Denise Newman and Nik Rabinowitz.

Riaad, Craig as well as the Material's tireless producer Ronnie Apteker will be in attendance. Riaad will also play a number of stand-up gigs in London during his stay.

Material will screen at the BFI London Film Festival on the following dates:

When: Thursday, 11 October at 21:00
Where: Screen on the Green, Upper Street, London N1 0NP

When: Saturday, 13 October at 13:00
Where: Cine Lumiere, Queensberry Place, Greater London SW7 2DT

When: Monday, 15 October at 13:15
Where: National Film Theatre, BFI Southbank, cinema 3
